To develop and execute a plan and resources that will educate, foster, and sustain nurses in their writing, publishing, and public speaking efforts.

Topics for Your Information and Use!

Speakers Resources

We would all like to sound articulate, polished, and confident when speaking before a large group; however, many of us have not mastered this skill and often find the experience extremely stressful. The Publications & Presentations Subcommittee would like to assist you in improving your public speaking skills. We have collected several resources to help you feel more comfortable about public speaking. Feel free to browse through our list and if you think of any other resources you would like to see added, please let us know.

Clinical Narratives

We are currently working on a revised new approach to introducing nurses to the world of “Clinical Narratives” and writing.

PowerPoint Presentations

We have two great pieces here for your use as you begin to think of planning your next PowerPoint presentation, or maybe this is you first one! The first one is PowerPoint Tips and you may also want to try the Rate Your Presentation Slides Audit. As the publications committee moves ahead with its activities, we may ask for some of your submissions of PowerPoint presentations that can be shared with other nurses. Stay tuned!

Writer's Mentoring Program

The Writer's Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for Civil Service, Tribal and Commissioned Corps nurses to receive guidance in the development of documents generated for i.e., policy and procedures, publications internal within institutions, external for journal or book publishers, awards, etc. Browse through the List of Categories for a more specific and detailed description to help to make your selection for assistance, and the writing venture you are embarking on!

If you are ready to start this process, or are interested in how the system works, click on the Mentee Protocol to read more about it. If you would like more information or have any questions, please contact the following Team members: Joyceadp@aol.com, madelyn.renteria@hrsa.hhs.gov, melissa.rael@samhsa.hhs.gov

Writer's Resources

Look what we have for you! We have identified a number of valuable resources that can assist you in writing. The first two links take you to writing websites that provide so much good information on a number of subjects and areas; in fact the Miriam-Webster Online has free word games that are really fun and also educational. When you have a chance, take some time, and explore through these informative websites, and we are hoping you can use these resources as you began to venture out on your writing! If you find a particularly good site you really find useful, drop us an email and let us know about it, and we will share this with our readers. Writers Presenters Internet Resources I and Writer's Resources II

In Writer's Resources III you will find some great Points on specific documentation; poster or podium abstract; research paper review; and position paper review. Please note, there is not a citation on these particular points, however we would like to thank the previous NPAC Publications Subcommittee (2003-2005) in developing these and passing them on.

***Presenters take notice: The website:

http://www.managementhelp.org/commskls/cmm_face.htm

has a great link to Communications Skills and some very useful information on presentation, listening, and tons of other information on good communication.

By the way, lots more coming on public speaking and presentation, stay tuned!!!

Celebrate Published Nurses

Take a look at our brand new feature on celebrating published nurses!! Here is our first quarterly submission of the most current list of publications (non-research type) of civil and USPHS nurses. Nurses may be primary or contributing authors in these publications. URL links appear when available. This list will be updated every quarter.

Published Nurses 2nd Quarter 2006
Published Nurses 1st Quarter 2006

SPECIAL FEATURE ARTICLE: “Working with USPHS: an adventure waiting to happen” Martha Phillips, Senior Co-step

If you have a submission to contribute, go to We Want Your Publications and follow the directions for submission and email to rabassett@anmc.org

If you have further questions on submission or in general related to this activity email LCDR Robin Bassett as well at same email address. We anticipate archiving each quarter as we replace it with the new quarter's submission. Enjoy the reading, lots to learn from our colleagues!!! In fact, you may even want to drop them an email and share your thoughts with them on their article. Also don't forget to send your article/s in and we will get them on board.

***Please note: The N-PAC Research Committee is looking to develop a list of PHS Nurse Researcher publications. If you have an electronic link, please provide the URL or send the citation in APA format to david.kelly@hhs.gov
